after a dizzy, dancing dash yesterday through downtown chicago with dorothy, we had an exquisite lunch at the atwood cafe (buttermilk crusted chicken pot pie, graham cracker calamari, green apple soup, and corn pudding). later, i crashed into dawn at the cosi cafe on franklin and washington. a tall peppermint tea, her good counsel and her aphrodisiac cookies made the world a much better place. here' dawn's recipe for "pine-nut cookies" .. very enchanting indeed!
3 cups of pine nuts
3 large egg whites
8 oz of "solo" brand almond paste
1 and 1/2 cups of sugar
mix if all up, roll it into 1 inch balls, drop the balls into the pinenuts and roll in the nuts. press the nuts gently into the cookie. bake on parchment or silpat sheets until lightly brown in a 350 degree oven.
simply heaven!
janis ian's new cd "billie's bones" is a masterpiece. on it, she has written a gripping song about the life of matthew shepard which is quite literally one of her greatest songs ever. some of the powerful lyrics:
"who did he harm, what was his crime
did he make them wonder deep inside
did they feel like real men when he died
did the waning moon look down on high
did the twinkling stars try to catch his eye
did the wind caress his flesh and bone
did they leave him there to die alone
what makes a man a man
the cut of a coat, the hint of a tan
it's not who you love but whether you can
what makes a man a man"

it's easter, or eastre, or eostra, or ostare, or ostara. easter is named for the goddess of spring. ostara is known as the harbinger of the sun. this goddess announces the rebirth of life in the spring and holds the promise of new beginnings and summer growth. ostara is a goddess of fertility, purification, and health, and healing.
this morning i ate a baby chick made out of creamy belgian chocolate . . . happy spring.
